About the team

Safer Food Scores is a team of food hygiene and health and safety consultants and trainers managed by Melissa Thompson MCIEH. Melissa is a director of the company and a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner. She graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with the HCIMA (now the Institute of Hospitality) Best Student Award before forging a career in the hospitality industry.

more » Melissa worked as a manager in a wide range of catering and hospitality companies including Holiday Inns Canada before moving into environmental health.

Having always found EHO inspections both scary and intriguing, she was surprised at how easily her catering skills transferred to enforcement. Melissa had found her niche and was able to use her catering experience to assist businesses in finding practical solutions to compliance problems. She was also able to quickly tell when the wool was being pulled over her eyes!

Melissa completed a part-time degree at the University of Greenwich whilst working full-time. Within months of graduating she was promoted to an Environmental Health Section Leader in charge of a team of enforcement officers with responsibility for food hygiene and health and safety in the borough’s food businesses. Priding herself in taking formal enforcement action only as a last resort but having never lost a case, Melissa worked in enforcement for 13 years reaching the position of Environmental Health Service Manager.

Melissa worked for five years for one of the leading food hygiene consultancies as an account manager, principal environmental health consultant and trainer before setting up Safer Food Scores. During that time she provided strategic consultancy to a number of prestigious restaurant, pub and hotel chains.
