Food allergic consumers more confident about eating out

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) welcomes new research published today, showing that people with food allergies and intolerances are more confident about eating out since allergen information rules were introduced in 2014. The study presents strong evidence that the legislation has had a positive impact and that good allergen information is good for business.

FSA Chair, Heather Hancock, has announced on behalf of the FSA, Defra, Food Standards Scotland and devolved administrations the re-appointment of eight existing members to the independent Advisory Committee on Animal Feedingstuffs.

The Advisory Committee for Novel Food and Processes (ACNFP) has reviewed two applications from a companies seeking authorisation under the simplified approval novel foods procedure to use their products in the European Union (EU). The ACNFP, which is an independent committee of scientists appointed by the FSA, has completed its assessment and is now asking for comments on their draft opinions.

New research on preventing the spread of norovirus

FSA has published research carried out by Ipsos MORI, Food handlers and norovirus transmission: Social science insights. This study aimed to help stop the 'winter vomiting bug' norovirus from spreading, by understanding and improving food handler behaviours.

A company has applied to the FSA for chia seeds to be approved for use in the European Union (EU) under the simplified approval procedure. The FSA will present the company’s application dossier to the independent expert committee and views are wanted on the dossier.

New Chair sought for the ACMSF

The Food Standards Agency Chairman Heather Hancock is inviting applications to fill the post of Chair of the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF). This post became vacant on 31 March 2017. The ACMSF is the independent expert committee which advises the FSA on microbiological food safety.

The Food Standards Agency is gathering together businesses from across Northern Ireland to urge them to make the food and drink they produce and serve healthier. The call - aimed at improving people’s health - encourages and supports the industry to take action in reducing the amount of salt, fat and sugar in food.
