Our Scores on the Doors support can help you improve your food hygiene rating
Local and national scores on the doors schemes

More than 250 local authorities now run scores on the doors schemes. If you operate in an area which has a scores on the doors scheme, the food hygiene rating of your last EHO kitchen inspection will be published on a website for your customers and the media to read. You may also display a scores on the doors certificate at the entrance to your establishment. The food hygiene rating is usually expressed as between 0 and 5 stars.

more » Though these scores on the doors schemes currently vary in their design, the FSA (Food Standards Agency) launched a national food hygiene rating scheme in October 2010. It is hoped that this will prevent any confusion caused by different arrangements in different areas, and ensure consistency for consumers and clarity for businesses. More than 100 local authorities have signed up to be ‘early adopters’ of the national scheme (including all the Welsh authorities) so it looks like scores on the doors schemes are here to stay!

The Government's advisor Lord Young in his health and safety review recommended that the FSA national food hygiene rating scheme become mandatory throughout the UK and that compulsory display of scores on the doors certificates be considered after a year. In the meantime the London local authorities and others that already operate a scores on the doors scheme have concerns with the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme and may continue with their own schemes.

Most scores on the doors schemes will decide your food hygiene rating according to three criteria:

• Food hygiene practices e.g. your catering HACCP and whether you follow it
• Structural standards e.g. cleanliness, repair and facilities provided
• Confidence in management e.g. track record, food hygiene training, HACCP forms

The scores that you receive for each of these criteria will be added together and used to determine your scores on the doors food hygiene rating. This rating may remain the same until your next EHO kitchen inspection - which in many of cases could be more than 18 months later!

The national scores on the doors food hygiene rating scheme allows re-visits to be made prior to this if improvements have been made. This is unpopular with a lot of local authorities who feel it is resource intensive and will remove the incentive for caterers to maintain standards between EHO inspections.
