First aid training and the law

Employers must to provide suitable first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel to enable immediate assistance to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. In order to provide first aid to injured or ill employees, first aiders must have a valid certificate of competence in first aid at work (FAW) or emergency first aid at work (EFAW).

more » EFAW training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. FAW training includes EFAW and also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses.

The findings of the first-aid needs assessment can help you decide whether your first-aiders should be trained in FAW or EFAW. As a guide, the table in the HSE Guidance - First aid at work: your questions answered suggests what first-aid personnel to provide under different circumstances. You can also use the new First aid at work assessment tool which is designed to help employers determine the number and type of first-aid personnel to provide in their workplace.


Food Allergy Update and Anaphylaxis First Aid Training

As the number of people suffering from food allergies is increasing rapidly, food businesses need tight controls in place to prevent the food they provide causing allergic reactions. In the event that something goes wrong and a customer or member of staff is affected, they need to know what first aid action they should take. 

more » This one day workshop in partnership with First Aid Specialists, HTS Training will ensure that your managers and staff will understand the importance of food allergies and have knowledge of the key controls necessary. The Workshop covers:
- identifying food allergens and assessing the risks
- food allergy and relevant food safety legislation
- basic first aid and administering CPR
- managing anaphylaxis reactions and choking incidents
- use of Epi-pen - who can use it, what circumstances, how it is administered, legal implications
- practice using Epi-pen

First Aid at Work Training Courses

We offer regular HSE (Health and Safety Executive) accredited first aid training courses via Qualsafe Awards including: Emergency First Aid at Work (one day) courses, First Aid at Work (three day) courses and Refresher First Aid at Work (two day) courses in Herts, Beds and Bucks. We offer these courses nationally on an in-house basis as well as CPR (Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) courses, AED (Automated External Defibrillation) courses, Paediatric First Aid and Sports First Aid courses.
